Given the new landscape in our post-COVID-19 world, we're all going to have to reinvent healthcare to some extent. As we continue through the recovery phase, planning becomes more critical. Any plan that you present must demonstrate maximum value for a concept that you can execute at the lowest cost possible--I will get you there.
As the national healthcare landscape becomes more unclear, the constants of increasing expenses and declining reimbursements are now exacerbated by social distancing and keeping your patient volumes at a level that sustains your practice. There is a good chance that innovation and strategic planning has temporarily taken a back seat. Not good!
The healthcare strategic planning horizon has already decreased dramatically over the years. This is mainly due to the ever-shifting regulations and having to focus efforts on cost containment. As medical practices attempt a financial recovery, strategic and tactical planning horizons are almost becoming one and the same.
The winning move is to act tactically but think strategically during this recovery phase. While you’re making day-to-day modifications to your practice take the time to create your roadmap. Brainstorm ideas that add value to your practice and always remember that it’s never strategy or tactics-- it’s both. This is illustrated by one of my favorite quotes from Sun Tzu, a Chinese general, military strategist, writer, and philosopher:
“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory, tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat."
As a medical practice leader, you want to be well organized and prepare thoughtful, well-researched plans. Your plan represents your brand and conveys that you’re a good steward of resources as you attempt to bring ideas to life.
There are as many types of plans as there are ideas. The smart move is determining which method will convey the necessary information succinctly and tailored to your audience.
In Healthcare, we use several essential documents that should fit just about any planning needs you have.
A strategic plan is pretty well defined (Vision, Mission, SWOT, GAP, etc.). Don't become mentally handcuffed and start checking boxes in complicated templates. Your comfort zone might be to follow the rules of strategic planning in form; however, new techniques like A2 planning and LEAN thinking will save you time and money.
Advances in innovation are not going away, so go ahead and embrace them as opportunities! Keep your eye on new treatments and technology. Stem cell therapy, molecular testing, DNA sequencing, digital pathology that uses artificial intelligence to help identify cancer, and hyper-specialty surgical centers for joint replacement are to name a few.
Everything and I mean EVERYTHING, will now demand the use of technology.
Cloud-based platforms, smartphone apps, web-based APIs for your EMR are all enhanced, cost-effective, efficient, and (most important) consumer-driven strategies. Create a fabulous digital experience for your patients-they deserve it.
Taking that first step into alien territory can be uncomfortable--be an explorer.
A big part of exploring is taking a calculated risk while finding new ways to advance your life or the organization you lead. With a solid plan, you can minimize the risk while going places that you never imagined.

Teamwork synergy is an adrenaline rush. The winning move is to coalesce a high-performance team and unleash them to solve your business problem. We all love to be big picture thinkers, but the real work is done by a small group of highly motivated people with diverse backgrounds and ideas.
